Constipation is the result of waste matter moving too slowly through
the bowels. Elimination is therefore not only infrequent, but is often
also painful.
Because the waste
matter remains in the body instead of being removed completely every
18 to 24 hours, other conditions such as bad breath, body odor, gas,
headaches, hemorrhoids, indigestion, malabsorption syndrome or even
bowel cancer can develop.
In most cases, the
cause of constipation is simply a lack of fibre and fluids in the diet.
Other causative factors include bowel disease, poor diet, taking iron
supplements, lack of exercise, aging, pregnancy, kidney failure or
diabetes.
